Tips for driving safely through construction zones

  • The more you travel Virginia’s highways, the more likely you are to drive through a construction zone. While this highway work might cause you a few inconveniences or delays at times, it’s vital for improving our transportation network and helping you get where you need to go. Keep the following tips in mind to keep yourself, and everyone around you, safe:
    • Watch for the color orange—orange signs, cones and barrels mark highway construction and maintenance work areas
    • Stay alert
      • Proceed with extreme caution
      • Watch out for highway workers
      • Drive at the posted speed (the fine for speeding in a work zone can be as high as $500)
      • Don’t change lanes or pass in work zones
      • Leave plenty of room between yourself and the vehicle in front of you
      • Reduce distractions like cell phones, changing channels on the radio, talking to passengers or eating while driving through work zones
    • To find locations of some of the larger highway projects now underway, visit www.virginiadot.org/travel and look under the “maps” section
